"...and they both took a deep breath. It had been quite a year for them, and longer. It seemed like a fairy tale in some parts, a nightmare in others, and many things in between, from a Shakespearean tragedy to a Hollywood love story. He would be cruel, or she would be cold, or he would shut her out, or she would run him through. No one knew how they could stay together like this, without money, without support... without sleep. They often felt as if the end to this twisted tale were a five-minute argument away, and they had plenty of those, as well as five-minute arguments which, like many a five-minute goodbye, turned into an hour or more. And yet, strangely enough, it was exactly what they wanted, precisely that for which they had been searching, despite what they felt was best for themselves. She needed someone who would abandon her, so she could be alone. He needed someone to scrutinize him, so he would learn not to magnify his own faults and shortcomings. But there were times when it simply got out of either one's control, times when they got wrapped up in each other and themselves so tightly that the ties which binded almost threw them apart. In these times, their souls had been tested, and, time and again, were judged to be strong, and not to surrender quietly. They began to see what the issues were, instead of how their control dramas would handle them. They began to see more of each other, and show the other that part that the other had not seen. In a way, they grew up. Not that it would last them the rest of their lives, or even a year, but nevertheless, it was a significant building block added to each of them that weekend. They sat back, relaxed, and took a deep breath. They had been given a new lease on this period of their lives, this time together, and they were happy."
